We are looking for a passionate and skilled Japanese to English translator to join our team in localizing Japanese comics (manga) for English-speaking readers. If you’re fluent in Japanese and have a deep love for manga, anime, or pop culture, we’d like to hear from you!
We are specifically looking for linguists with prior experience in comic translation who can commit to working on multiple titles over the course of the two-month project.
Project details :
- Content Type: Japanese comics (minor titles, mostly short pages)
- Language Pair: Japanese to English
- Expected Quality: Publishing-level human translation (MTPE not acceptable)
- Project Duration: Mid-August to Mid-October
- Tool: MemoQ
- Reference Materials: PDF of the comics (No style guide or glossary provided)
Requirements:
- The Japanese speech bubbles are written vertically, while the English version will be horizontal.
- The English translation should maintain a similar length to the source to ensure it fits the layout properly.
- This will require a degree of transcreation, similar to subtitle translation, to make the text natural yet concise.
- Proficiency in Japanese
- Excellent command of written English
- Experience with comic or visual storytelling content (preferred)
- Familiarity with Japanese slang, dialects, honorifics, and pop culture
- Ability to handle sensitive or niche genre content if needed
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately translate Japanese comic content into natural, fluent English
- Maintain tone, style, and cultural context appropriate to the characters and storyline
- Meet deadlines and ensure consistent quality across volumes
